Santa's little T helper cell with CD40L and T cell receptor. Helper T-cells are one the most important types of cells involved in adaptive immune response. They are a type of immune cell that help fight infection. When they sense an infection, they activate cytotoxic T-cells or B-cells to produce antibodies and help killer cells develop. Killer T-cells have granules (small particles) with enzymes that can detect and control early signs of cancer, virally infected cells, and protect against disease.
CD40 ligand or CD40L, is a protein that is primarily expressed on activated T cells. It binds to CD40 on antigen-presenting cells (APC), inducing proliferation of CD4+ T cells upon TCR activation. The TCR (T-cell receptor) is a complex of integral membrane proteins that participate in the activation of T-cells in response to an antigen.
